Cosmetic clinics around the country are reporting an increasing number of customers asking for laser photofacials. This is still a relatively new treatment, but people who have experienced favorable results from it are creating word-of-mouth interest in the technique. Clinics that do not yet offer the laser photofacial will likely add the treatment to their list of services in the near future.

Laser photofacials are used for skin rejuvenation, including the minimizing of spider veins and the lightening of discolored areas of the skin. The process uses intense pulsed light (IPL) precisely directed to the problem areas by a hand-held device. The IPL delivers heat deep below the surface of the skin, penetrating the lower dermal layer and changing the nature of the pigments there. After three to four treatments, spaced about three weeks apart, the faulty pigmentations are corrected, and the skin is left clear, smooth and rejuvenated.

Some people who receive laser photofacials find that their areas of dark pigmentation seem to grow darker in the first few days after a session. This effect is actually desirable, because this concentrated, darker pigment will then flake off, leaving the skin entirely. Aestheticians refer to them as coffee grounds. After the prescribed series of treatments is completed, this sloughing off will no longer occur.
