Laser photofacials are among the newest tools in the beauty-restoring arsenal of dermatologists and clinical aestheticians nationwide. Using intense pulsed light (IPL), laser photofacials are designed to remove pigmentation problems, such as rosacea, age spots and freckles. The light is directed onto the problem areas of the skin using a hand-held device for greater accuracy. The light penetrates deep down to the dermal and sub-dermal layers of the skin, leaving the outer layers untouched. The dark pigments concentrate together and begin to flake off over the next few days.

Laser photofacials usually require three to four sessions to completely remove the dark pigments. Each time the pigments darken and flake off, they become lighter and lighter, until finally, they disappear entirely. What's left behind is smooth, evenly colored skin. The process takes between 20 and 40 minutes for each session, and it is painless. The only side effect most people experience is a temporary reddening of the skin. Fortunately, it usually goes away very quickly, often within an hour of having the treatment.
