Body Hair Removal Is Available NowA major development in the annals of modern body hair removal for women took place in the early 1900s. An advertising campaign launched in North America sang the praises of the hairless female form. Consumers were smitten with its message, and a body hair removal trend was born that continues to this day. Up until that time, body hair on women was seen as being perfectly acceptable. The campaign that changed everything was created by the Wilkinson Sword Company, which made razor blades. Fashion at that time was becoming more revealing; bared shoulders and armpits were becoming more and more commonplace. The executives at Wilkinson Sword created a marketing initiative that succeeded in convincing the women of the United States that underarm hair was unhygienic, unfeminine, and unwanted. The photo that changed it all ran in the May 1915 edition of Harper's Bazaar, a popular women's fashion magazine. The photo showed a lovely young model clad in an outfit that revealed her bare shoulders and hairless armpits. Sales of razor blades doubled within a two-year time period as women jumped through hoops to make themselves fit within this new standard. This feminine ideal persists to this day in the United States. However, women in places like Europe--and even those in locations closer to home, such as French Canada--haven't been afraid to turn their backs on body hair removal and embrace a more hirsute aesthetic.
