Illinois Laser Hair RemovalWhat is laser hair removal? The process can refer to both a technique that uses lasers and one that uses Intense Pulsed Light to reduce unwanted growth permanently. Understand Laser Hair RemovalThe term refers to any process that removes unwanted growth with highly focused light. The destruction of surrounding support tissue makes the procedure more permanent than waxing. The use of light makes it less painful. The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technique uses a xenon flash lamp to target hairs. The exposed shaft and root are disintegrated, but during the process, the heat running into the root also destroys the surrounding structures (follicles). This prevents the follicle from being able to support new growth. Laser systems also use highly focused heat to damage the structures, but the type of beam is different. Several different wavelengths have been used over the years, but all work in essentially the same way. In both procedures, the machine targets melanin, found most densely in the root bulb. This allows the beam to damage only follicles and not the surrounding tissue. Because melanin is involved, those with light skin and dark hair are the best candidates for light-based solutions. There are side effects, as the procedure can remove melanin from the surrounding tissue. A consultation should be done to ensure that the patient is a good candidate for this procedure.
